Don't Get Stuck In The Heat: 3 Ways To Extend The Life Of Your Air Conditioner

Posted on

If you're like most people, you want your air conditioner to last as long as possible. That means that you're going to do everything you can to keep it in good condition. In addition to the routine maintenance it's going to need each year, there are some other simple tricks you can use to help your air conditioner last longer. Here are a few things that you can do to keep your air conditioner in peak operating condition.

Let It Take a Break

Imagine if you were to drive your car nonstop, every day. It would probably break down very quickly. That's what will happen if you leave your air conditioner running non-stop. You can extend the life of your AC by giving it a few breaks throughout the day. That doesn't mean you have to suffer through the heat, either. Below are three simple ways to give your AC a break.

  • Turn it off at night
  • Turn the thermostat up when you leave
  • Use fans to circulate the cool air

Clean the Main Unit

Your air conditioner is outside, which means it's exposed to dirt on a daily basis. That dirt can get caked on the blades and in the motor housing. Once your air conditioner is dirty, it will have to work much harder to cool down your home.

Keep your AC clean by hosing it off once a week. Simply attach a high pressure nozzle to your garden hose and spray down the AC. Be sure to spray the interior blades and the exterior grill. This will remove the dirt that's making your AC work too hard.

Check the Air Flow

Turn your air conditioner on and place your hand up against the vents in your home. If you're not feeling the cool air blow through the vents, you may have a problem with the ducts or filter. A dirty filter can stop the air from flowing through your home.

Be sure to replace your air filter at least once every other month. If you live in an area that's prone to high winds or dust, you should replace your filter once a month. Once you've replaced your filter, use your vacuum to clean out the ducts. Simply remove the vent covers and place the vacuum extension hose inside each vent. Clean your vents at least twice a year to help extend the life of your AC.

You depend on your AC to keep you cool during the summer. You can keep your AC working properly by following the steps provided here. For more information, contact a professional like those at Smedley & Associates, Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning.
